グレッグ・フリーマン（Greg Freeman)のニューシングル「Curtain」を聴いてみよう。8月22日にTransgressive Records/Canvasback Musicから発売予定の『Burnover』の2曲目の先行曲だ。今月初めのザ・グレート・エスケープでのフリーマンの満員御礼のライブセットに続いてリリースされた。

グレッグ・フリーマンにとって、先月は忙しい日々だった。 ハミルトン・ライタウザー（ザ・ウォークメン）とのアメリカ・ツアーに始まり、グレート・エスケープ、ドット・トゥ・ドット・フェスティバルへの出演を含むヨーロッパでのヘッドライナー・ツアーを終えたばかり。

「Curtain」を聞けばわかる通り、フリーマンがリメイク/編曲を行ったため、このアルバムは本来の輝きを増すに至った。元々、蛇行するギタージャムのデモが作られたが、ピアニストのサム・アタラーがスタジオでタック・ピアノのテイクを録音し、楽曲全体が新しく生まれ変わったのだ。
生き生きとしたリードボーカルが曲を活性化させる。特にフリーマンが "My thoughts die out slowly on the blood swept plains where I see you every night / And to the lonely hours, it's like burning the furniture to keep the house bright at night "と歌っている。("僕の思いは、毎晩君を見かける血に塗れた平原でゆっくりと死に絶え/ 孤独な時間には、夜、家を明るく保つために家具を燃やすようなものだ'')

‘Curtain’ is the new single from Greg Freeman and the second to be revealed from his forthcoming album ‘Burnover’, set for release on 22nd August via Transgressive Records/Canvasback Music. The single arrives following Freeman’s packed out set at The Great Escape earlier this month.
The song is accompanied by a music video directed by Carl Elsaesser and uses repurposed footage from one of Carl’s short films. Describing the track as “a love song of sorts,” Freeman noted its spontaneous feel, sharing that the vocals were likely a first take to preserve a free-flowing, unpolished quality. The song features subtle touches like barnyard animal sounds, but Freeman credits Cam and Sam’s performances on soprano saxophone and piano as the elements that “really made the song."
‘Curtain’ follows the previously released single ‘Point and Shoot’ which received acclaim from outlets like Uncut, The Line of Best Fit, Stereogum, Paste, Brooklyn Vegan, and Consequence, building anticipation for the album’s release later this summer.
The last month has been busy for the rising singer songwriter. He started off the month on tour in the US with Hamilton Leithauser (The Walkmen) and just wrapped up a headlining tour in Europe, including festival appearances at The Great Escape & Dot to Dot Festival. Looking ahead, Freeman will be playing with This Is Lorelei at NYC's Knockdown Center on July 19th, followed by another headlining EU tour starting in August, and then will be capping it off with an October U.S. tour supporting Grandaddy.
When Freeman quietly released his debut LP I Looked Out in 2022, it had no PR campaign, label, or music industry promo, but still garnered praise from notable critics, with Steven Hyden of UPROXX calling it “my favorite album of 2022 that I discovered in 2023,” and Paste Magazine naming it among the 25 Best Debut Albums of the 2020s. The word-of-mouth success of that release had Freeman on a relentless tour schedule.
Explosive, unsettling, and undeniable, the 10 tracks presented on Burnover meld energetic indie rock with an ambling twang. The album truly shines when Freeman tweaks the formula, like on today's release, ‘Curtain’. Originally demoed as a meandering guitar jam, the track came to life when pianist Sam Atallah tracked a tack-piano take at the studio. His lively leads invigorate the song, especially as Freeman sings lines like, “My thoughts die out slowly on the blood swept plains where I see you every night / And to the lonely hours, it’s like burning the furniture to keep the house bright at night.” Freeman says, “As soon as Sam laid down the piano, we heard the song for what it was and it came alive.” Burnover is Freeman’s most adventurous and personal yet, cementing him as a singular songwriting talent.
