LAの16人編成のジャズ軍団、The Urban Renewal Project 待望のニューアルバム『Love Glory Duty Death』をリリース

ロサンゼルスを拠点とする16人編成のコレクティブ、ザ・アーバン・リニューアル・プロジェクトの新作アルバム『Love Glory Duty Death』は、今週のアルバムの中でも最も個性的な魅力に満ちている。

ロサンゼルスから登場したジャズの野武士たちは、エズラ・コレクティヴのようなジャズエッセンスを持ちながらも、西海岸のストリートに浸された生の音楽を発信し続けている。彼らはこのアルバムで世界に対して問いかける。「貨幣主義社会において最も信頼すべきものとは何か？」

もちろん、西海岸は古くからギャングスタラップの名産地として名高い。しかし、ニューヨークのブロンクス地区とのヒップホップ抗争は今や姿形を変え、ラディカルな要素は時代遅れの残影となった。彼らがヒップホップやジャズのプレイを基に訴えかけるのは、このジャンルの友愛的な側面ーー強固な結束とフレンドシップーーである。もし、ビッグバンドのジャズアンサンブルにブロックハンプトンのオールドスクール・ヒップホップが合体したら？　そんな贅沢な音楽ファンの期待に彼らは応えてくれている。週末の気分を華やかにしてくれる音楽が登場した。ファンタスティックなヒップホップジャズを皆さんもちょっとだけ体験してみてほしい。

このバンドはジャンルを超えた冒険的なサウンドで知られ、ジャズ、ヒップホップ、ヴィンテージ・ソウルの要素を融合させた爆発的でユニークな聴き心地を生み出すザ・アーバン・リニューアル・プロジェクト。このヒップホップジャズ軍団は、近年の二つのジャンルのクロスオーバーの流行を象徴づけるかのように、多彩なキャラクターを擁する音楽性を主な特徴にしている。新鮮なグルーヴと熱気あふれるビッグバンドのホーンライン、滑らかなヒップホップのリズムを組み合わせ、ノスタルジックでありながら境界を押し広げるような音楽を創り出す。 

コラボレーションのメンバーにも注目だ。全12曲収録の本アルバムには、著名ラッパーのオー・ノー（マッドリブの弟でありクリエイティブパートナー）や、Netflix『リズム＆フロー』の出場者である非凡なアーティスト、ティア・Pなど、刺激的なコラボレーションが多数収録されている。 

アルバムには、観覧席を揺るがすパーティーアンセムでありヒップホップ黄金期への賛歌「Shake Those Hips」、そして金銭への果てしない欲求への皮肉を巧みに描いたアンセム的なヒップホップ傑作「Money - featuring Oh No」が収録されている。その他のハイライトには、バンドのインドネシア・ツアーから着想を得た「Red Eye」、燃え上がるような「Rush」が含まれる。

The Urban Renewal Project, a sixteen-piece collective based in Los Angeles, deliver their new album “Love Glory Duty Death” – arguably the most distinctive offering among this week's releases.

Emerging from Los Angeles, these jazz renegades carry the essence of groups like the Ezra Collective while continuing to broadcast raw music steeped in West Coast street culture. Through this album, they pose a question to the world: ‘What is the most trustworthy thing in a monetary society?’


Naturally, the West Coast has long been renowned as a cradle of gangsta rap. Yet the hip-hop rivalry with New York's Bronx has now transformed, its radical elements reduced to outdated relics. What they advocate through their hip-hop and jazz performances is the fraternal aspect of the genre – its strong bonds and friendship.

Known for their adventurous, genre-transcending sound, The Urban Renewal Project fuse elements of jazz, hip-hop, and vintage soul to create an explosive and uniquely captivating listening experience. This hip-hop jazz collective, seemingly embodying the recent crossover trend between the two genres, is characterised by a richly diverse musicality. Combining fresh grooves, the fervour of big band horn sections, and smooth hip-hop rhythms, they craft music that is nostalgic yet boundary-pushing. 


The collaborative members are also noteworthy. This 12-track album features numerous exciting collaborations, including renowned rapper Oh No (Madlib's brother and creative partner) and the exceptional artist Tia P, a contestant on Netflix's “Rhythm & Flow”. 


The album includes the party anthem “Shake Those Hips”, a tribute to hip-hop's golden era that shakes the stands, and the anthemic hip-hop masterpiece “Money - featuring Oh No”, which masterfully satirises the endless pursuit of wealth. Other highlights include “Red Eye”, inspired by the band's Indonesian tour, and the blazing “Rush”.

Their distinctive sound, blending elements of jazz, hip-hop and vintage soul, has captivated audiences worldwide, from SXSW to the Java Jazz Festival. The ensemble features the vocals of singer Alex Nester, dual MCs Elmer Demond and Slim Da Reazon and a formidable ten-piece horn section.
