Her new music bears a profound connection to fantasy novels overall, forming a significant creative focus within her highly anticipated EP scheduled for release in early 2026.
Mel Denisse's new track “going nowhere” epitomises the female-led shoegaze revival movement. Inspired by the fantasy novel “The Serpent & the Wings of Night” by Carissa Broadbent, this melancholic alternative rock/shoegazer song weaves themes of surviving unnoticed, the conflict between loyalty and self-preservation, and striving to move forward while feeling lost, all within a nostalgic and introspective atmosphere.
Mel Dennis has drawn from an inexhaustible array of sounds, from Failure and Deftones to Tori Amos. She pursues what she calls a “controlled collision”. Her voice drifts like smoke, then growls and cracks on the next beat, beneath which jagged guitar loops pulse.
On her approach to music-making, she says, ‘I like to assemble tracks like Frankenstein.’ ‘Even if heavy riffs and delicate melodies seem mismatched on paper, that's precisely what draws me in.’
Mel Dennis, an artist and producer transcending genres, crafts music that hovers between raw, gritty guitar and unconventional pop. Captivated by his father's acoustic guitar at ten, she recorded demos using cracked software during his teens and embarked on MySpace-era tours by eighteen.
Subsequent years shuttling between Nashville and Los Angeles honed her songwriting and production skills. She layers ethereal, classical-tinged vocals over a foundation of distorted alternative rock, sprinkling in Eastern melodies absorbed from her childhood spent in Florida and Turkey. Her lyrics delve into duality, obsession, and the tug-of-war between self-preservation and self-destruction.
Dennis's past work has been aired on BBC Radio 1's alternative programme and featured on Spotify's “All New Rock” playlist. Music media outlet Vanyaland praised it as ‘the raw ambition of 90s guitar rock’, while Wolf in a Suit described the debut as ‘a hypnotic work that resonates deep within the soul’.
Speaking about personalising music for fans, she says: ‘If a song gives you that tender yet heart-stirring feeling, that's the aim. I slip a mirror into the song so you can't help but confront what's reflected there.’
In the studio, she’s worked with Carlos de la Garza (Paramore, Best Coast), Ken Andrews (Paramore, M83) , Micah Tawlks (Hayley Williams, Noah Kahan, Ashe), and longtime collaborator/producer Stephen Laurenson.
